5 Reasons Your Family Should Be Drinking More Water

Since 1953, City View Plumbing has made it our business to know a thing or two about water. Clean water shouldn’t just be a priority for your home; your body needs it too. Today, we discuss why you and your family should be drinking plenty of water.

Getting enough water is essential for your health. Water is an important part of our daily lives already. Everywhere you go, you likely see people carrying bottles of water. You probably consume quite a bit already, but we can all drink more. There are so many reasons why you should.

1. Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids

Our bodies are about 60% water. Water helps us perform bodily functions like digestion, absorption, circulation, saliva production, nutrient transportation and body temperature maintenance. When we are not drinking enough water, our brain lets us know by triggering our body’s thirst mechanism. Through our posterior pituitary glands, our brains communicate with our kidneys and decide how much water to designate for urine and hold onto for reserves. Too little water leads to dehydration, which is dangerous for many reasons.

2. Water Helps Us Control Calories

Drinking a lot of water has been a popular weight loss strategy. It doesn’t necessarily affect weight loss on its own, though drinking more of it than high caloric beverages does make a difference. Eating foods that are water-rich are typically healthier, more filling and help us limit calorie intake. They also help us feel full sooner. Fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, beans and broth-based soups are examples of water-rich foods. So yes, you can eat your water too.

3. Water Energizes Muscles

We experience muscle fatigue when our cells don’t maintain a balance of fluids. Drinking enough water is especially important when we exercise for this reason. Sweating causes us to lose fluids, and while we know it’s wise to drink water throughout our exercise regimens, it is equally important to drink it before starting.

4. Water Keeps Our Skin Healthy

Our skin contains plenty of water and acts as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. We’re not saying that overhydration will remove wrinkles or fine lines, but dehydration will definitely add wrinkles and make your skin appear dry. As a bonus, use lotion to lock in moisture as an additional physical barrier to fluid loss.

5. Water Improves Kidney Function

Body fluids transport waste in and out of our cells. Our kidneys do a great job of cleansing our body of toxins, as long as you drink enough water. You will know if you are not drinking enough water when your urine is darker in color, has a strong odor and appears highly concentrated. When you drink too little water, you are at an increased risk of getting kidney stones.
